{"id":311,"date":"2012-08-03T08:58:34","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T12:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.annawahrman.com\/wp\/?p=311"},"modified":"2012-08-03T08:58:34","modified_gmt":"2012-08-03T12:58:34","slug":"yes-the-cracks-are-showing-in-news-apps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/annawahrman.com\/index.php\/2012\/08\/yes-the-cracks-are-showing-in-news-apps\/","title":{"rendered":"Yes, the cracks are showing in news apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Short post today, in response to <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2012\/08\/02\/huffpo-the-daily-and-the-flawed-ipad-content-model\/\">Matthew Ingram at GigaOm, who asks<\/a>, in light of the recent news about the Huffington app <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalnewyork.com\/article\/media\/2012\/08\/6346493\/huffington-makes-her-tablet-magazine-free-after-five-issues\" target=\"_blank\">going free<\/a> and The Daily <a href=\"http:\/\/paidcontent.org\/2012\/07\/31\/the-daily-is-laying-off-50-employees-yanking-some-original-content\/\" target=\"_blank\">laying off<\/a> a good chunk of staff: &#8220;Are these two isolated cases, or a sign that cracks are starting to show in the content model that publishers have bought into with the iPad?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Answer: The latter. Slightly longer answer: Publishers only dreamed that the iPad would create a new revenue stream. In most cases, it hasn&#8217;t, so back the the drawing board. <a title=\"The difficult world of app development\" href=\"http:\/\/45.33.43.36\/2012\/05\/02\/the-difficult-world-of-app-development\/\" target=\"_blank\">I&#8217;ve said before<\/a> that I don\u2019t think the business case is there in most cases.
