{"id":177,"date":"2012-06-01T01:17:18","date_gmt":"2012-06-01T05:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.annawahrman.com\/wp\/?p=177"},"modified":"2012-06-01T01:17:18","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T05:17:18","slug":"can-we-monetize-mobile-already-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/annawahrman.com\/index.php\/2012\/06\/can-we-monetize-mobile-already-please\/","title":{"rendered":"Can we monetize mobile already, please?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I didn&#8217;t really understand a lot of the slides in <a href=\"http:\/\/allthingsd.com\/20120530\/mary-meekers-internet-trends-live-at-d10-slides\/\">Mary Meeker&#8217;s presentation at D10<\/a>, which All Things D and Scribd were nice enough to share, but a few sure stood out.<\/p>\n<p>In this pair of slides we can see that tablet (which counts as mobile, compared with desktop) has seen explosive growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/45.33.43.36\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/twoshot.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-178\" title=\"mobile_growth\" src=\"http:\/\/45.33.43.36\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/twoshot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"913\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now look at the monetization.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/45.33.43.36\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Screen-Shot-2012-05-31-at-10.05.31-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-180\" title=\"Screen Shot 2012-05-31 at 10.05.31 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/45.33.43.36\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Screen-Shot-2012-05-31-at-10.05.31-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"455\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What?! Why are we still trying to justify $3.50 CPM on desktops (versus 75 cents on mobile!) when as we&#8217;ve just seen, mobile use is on track to surpass desktop (as it already has in India). This is not any one business&#8217;s problem (which seems to be a popular opinion with regard to Facebook). It&#8217;s every business&#8217;s problem, and it&#8217;s mystifying how we have been ignoring it. Web publishers are already playing catch-up to web users&#8217;\/readers&#8217; value versus those from print (compare $10 or so) &#8212; let&#8217;s not roll over any more than we  must. Let&#8217;s work on real solutions for monetizing mobile already.
